Safe Handling and Storage Guidelines for Frozen Raw Dog Food at Home

Raw feeding doesn't need to be complicated. But it does involve raw meat, so good hygiene and proper storage is important.

The same basic rules you'd follow when handling raw meat when preparing your own food apply when preparing your dog's food: keep it cold, keep things clean and store it properly.

Frozen raw dog food should be stored in your freezer until you're ready to use it. Keep your freezer at -18°C or below and only take out what you need to defrost.

Once you receive your Wolf Tucker delivery, get it into the freezer as soon as you can after it arrives. Although this is true - don’t panic if you’re not around the moment your delivery arrives. We use double walled insulated boxes for delivery, and so long as the product is cold to the touch when it arrives it is safe to store in the freezer. (Remember to wash your hands after you touch the product!).

Once you’re ready to use your Wolf Tucker food, defrost it in the fridge. Our tub and lid is leakproof, meaning it is the best possible container for this process. When you are ready to feed your dog portion out what you need, and then return any remaining contents back to the fridge where it can stay safely in the fridge in our tub and lid for up to four days,

Once your dog has gobbled their Wolf Tucker meal make sure you wash food bowls thoroughly using hot water and detergent. Any utensils, scoops, chopping boards or surfaces used to prepare raw food should also be thoroughly cleaned after use. And of course, you need to wash your hands too! To avoid any cross-contamination, we know that some raw feeders have a dedicated area for preparing their dog's food and, where practical, use separate utensils and chopping boards for raw pet food.

Wolf Tucker is produced to the highest safety standards and raw ingredients can naturally vary in colour, texture and appearance. It is normal for different batches of food to look slightly different. But use common sense - if the packaging is damaged, the food has been stored incorrectly, or you have genuine concerns about its condition - please contact us and we can offer advice.
